Telewest cable modem prob

My parents' Telewest cable modem keeps losing sync - does anyone know if
these modems have some sort of ID built in that might prevent me from
swapping it out for my sisters' cable modem for a day or two ?

I haven`t witnessed the problem myself, but at least swapping them over
in this manner will help identify if its a hardware problem with one of
the modems so we can tackle the problem appropriately.

TIA

Possibly someone has "Cloned" your parents modem Mac address, this is where
someone buys a modem, scans the area for "Mac" addresses and uses the same
"Mac" address from the same area hence kicking off the proper modem.

Are they on a highspeed connection?

Why don't you post in the BY newsgroups and get tech support to have a look
at the problem, you should also post the logs from the CM.

I didn`t realise it was possible to grab a mac address remotely - and the
PC its connected to is pretty tightly locked down (I built it myself)
with firewall / spybot scanned regularly etc.

I`m not on BY myself, although I could post from within their network if
I pay either of `em a visit...

Time is not something we have a lot of at the moment though due to an
accident to a member of the family last week (probably now paralysed)

How do I go about getting the CM logs ?

The modem isn`t protected though, thats what the trouble is :0(
No matter what security you have on your PC the modem is at the for-front of
it.

If they are on 1 meg + speeds I reckon that could be the problem

My friend had the same problem with his Telewest cable modem before,
turned out, the cable to modem connector needs tighten up.

OK cheers... i`ll check all the obvious* when things quieten down, but
failing that, does anyone know if the modems can be swapped out to rule
them out of the equation ?

*i`ve also know someone who had a faulty PSU for his cable modem which
made it drop constantly rather than intermittently

The Cable Modem MAC is tied to a particular user's account for
authentication and network security purposes.

You'll need to contact the technical support team to help out. You
can post to our support groups via news-text.blueyonder.co.uk offnet
if you have a correct BY username and password combination to
authenticate off net [that may help].

Cheers

Alex

Most of the modems BY use have their logs at http://192.168.100.1 - I
*think* the Webstar modem doesn't have that and you may need to try
something else. Do post on the BY forums as tech support will be able to
give you some help.
