Telewest Cable Modem and Belkin Wireless Router

Hi
I've just bought a Belkin Wireless G Router and can't get it to connect
via the cable modem to the web.

I've disconnect the cable modem from the PC (it was connected using
USB) and connected a network cable supplied from the modem to the
router's modem port. The router works but I cannot figure how to get
it to connect to the internet - the Belkin Easy Install Wizard fails
at a point where it says its trying to connect to the router.

This is odd as the wireless connection does work between my laptop and
the router, the connection is registered and I can use IPCONFIG and
PING to see the connection and access the internal setup of the router
via a web connection http://192.168.2.1/

But I don't understand how the internet connection is made. The
Belkin Setup wizard asks for connection type (Dynamic (which is says is
for cable modem), Static, PpoE etc) - which one do I choose? Is it
obvious where the problem lies? Does the router need to store the user
name/password etc?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Roy

Did you power down your TW cable modem before making all the connections ?

Yes, but it didn't seem to make any difference. What connection type
needs to be made from the router and does it store the user
name/password as well?
Thanks

No usernames or passwords are stored, the connection is made by the modems
MAC number
set up router to
Dynamic
DNS - Auto
clone MAC address
I am using a Belkin F5D7231uk4

I don't think you're using the instruction book! For further help dedicated
to NTL and telewest people (by people that work for them) go to
www.chetnet.co.uk . Post a message in the forum and standby for the
answers.

It sounds like you used the switch on the top of the cable modem to power it
down.
It doesn't, it just turns the lights off.
You have to pull the mains plug to reset the cable modem or the router will
not work.
It should work out of the box, the only settings you need are to change its
admin password and to set the wireless security and you can do that after
its working.

I assume that the Easy Setup Wizard won't work in this case as my PC
that has been connected to the cable modem via USB has died. (This has
been replaced by a laptop.) Therefore I assume that auto cloning the
MAC address is not possible unless I go through the hoop of installing
the cable modem direct on the new laptop first before setting up the
router.

Alternatively I assume that the MAC address is printed on the label of
the cable modem and I could enter this directly in the router's
advanced setup by using a browser. Have I got this right?

I am advised elsewhere that the host name should be left blank when WAN
connection type is set to dynamic.

Regards Roy

You don't need to do anything with MAC addresses.
TW removed that requirement a couple of years ago.
As long as you reset the cable modem by unplugging the mains it will accept
whatever is connected to it (PC or router).

The only possible thing you may want to do is to clone the MAC address of
the PC so that you don't need to reset the cable modem if you swap from PC
to router and vice versa.

I had an old Netgear that just didn't work on BY if you left the hostname
blank.
It did matter what you put in there but it didn't work without something.
This was some bug in the Netgear and/or BY's DHCP server.

Thanks for that - I see now that the MAC address cloning in my case is
only relevant if I wish to swap the modem's connection between the old
PC (if/when I get it fixed) and the router.

Did you mean that any name at all would do? Do I understand it right
that BY don't allocate a name for use with each BB client? Or what do I
need to put in?

Thanks for the reply - it clears up a lot of issues that are directly
relevant to my BY account. Your time and help are greatly appreciated.

Regards, Roy

No BY don't allocate a name to put in your router.

I just put "x" in it and it worked.
It didn't work with a blank name.
I don't have the same router anymore so I can't tell if BY changed
something,
but you don't need anything in my current router.
