Telewest / Blueyonder ADSL : Motorola modem cabling?

Hi everyone,

Hope someone can help me.

My office uses Blueyonder 500 from BlueYonder ( Telewest ), connecting
through a Motorola ADSL cable modem - unsure of the model , sorry.

My problem is this: the office was broken into last week, and the modem
was stolen, amongst other things. They did leave the cabling, just took
the actual box.

I picked up another ADSL modem, but the connector form the BY cable
isn't a standard BYT jack type, like most other ADSL modems I've seen.

I spoke to BY, who said that I had to get a new modem from them, at 250
+ VAT! This did include an engineer callout though.

( An engineer, to literally plug it in ! )

Any idea if the connector on the cable could be amended to a standard
BT type, so I can use any modem? I have no idea if the internal cabling
inside adsl modems is standard, and it's just a different pin that BY
have used?

Many thanks for any advice - the thought of paying 250 + VAT is
sickening!

Regards,

Dave.

Blueyonder does not use ADSL - You need a Cable Modem, not an ADSL
modem. The modem that has been pinched is probably Telewest's property
so you are possibly required to replace it (at your expense)

Didn't your office have any insurance?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for that - I wasn't aware there was a difference.

The modem was provided as part of the package when we signed up - which
included a ? 250 installation fee, but the modem became our property.

Yes, we're insured - but I don't think it's worth the hassle of
claiming, TBH.

Thanks again - I'll have a look for a cable modem.

Regards,

Dave.

Bad form to follow up my own post but... Your initial deal (£250
installation) sounds a bit like the early NTL deal as well ie You buy
the modem and pay and install fee. I've got a 'low mileage' 3Com CMX
Cable modem kicking around because I moved to ADSL after NTL started
giving the modems away

Can you just cease your existing contract and then sign up again?

Peter

Blueyonder does actually have some ADSL business customers. The OP should
check to make sure he is not one of these. Probably the easiest way is by
looking at the end of the cable left by the intruder. Is it a round screw on
plug (cable modem) or a plug in type plug (adsl)?

Hi Paul

the cable that leads from the wall box is screw on at the box end, with
a single pin that plugs into a round hole at the modem end, it isn't a
BT style jack type as my home ADSL from BT has.

Yup, we're actually moving offices in a couple of months and will be
switching to another supplier then - it's just a pain not having access
for now.

Thanks for the tip though.

Dave.

Yup, as your next post says - this was supplied "free" with the install
and became our property at that time.

Dave.

Like a TV aeriel type fitting - is that co-axial?

That's the connection type.

Dave.

Hi

You can only connect a Blueyonder supplied modem to your connection and
it's cable broadband *not* ADSL. As you're a BY customer why don't you ask
this in a BY support newsgroup?

Regards

Bill
