TCP/IP printing in W98SE

I found a few exchanges back on the 14th about printing
over a network to a printer connected to a print server
with a static IP but something's going on with the
Microsoft websight and I can't get back to pages other
than the first one that this message is appearing on.

My problem is this. I'm setting up a small office network
and, for the first time, I'm not using a server - so it's
just a workgroup. Accessing a printer's print server with
W2K and XP is no problem because they have the Simple
TCP/IP port available in their printer setup. But what
happens with Windows 98? I've tried putting the IP
address of the printer in the printer window of the Add
Printer wizard but that does nothing. Currently I've just
been able to access the printer by sharing it on one of
the W2K workstations but that requires that the W2K PC to
be on and logged on in order for the people in the office
to use this printer.

Actually the printer is a networked Sharp copier/fax
machine. We're currently waiting for an internal print
server for the other printer, an HP 4 Plus. That should
require the Jet Direct software which I understand some
version is on the W98SE CD.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

See if Sharp has the Win98 print over IP driver available to download.
Win2000 and WinXP have native ability to print to an IP
printer...Win98 does not. Without this driver you have found the only
solution I can think of...map to a Win2000 or WinXP machine.

Good Luck...

I set up lots of w/98 PCs with TCP printing. We had to install HP's
jetadmin client software package on every PC, as I recall. It worked
great with HP printers, and would be worth a try with yours, if you
can find an old copy.

The manufacturer of the printer server should be able to tell
you how to get your w/98 systems connected.

Thanks to you both.

I did some surfing in the search engines last night, too,
and found an LPR client for W9x at Winsite.com called the
Brooks INTELLIscribe LPR Client. But at $69 a license
it's pretty pricey. I may just leave things as they are.
The W2K Pro PC has plenty of extra capacity to act as a
printer server without bogging down. I may try Jet Admin
with the HP 4 Plus just to educate myself about it if I
have time.

At any rate, I hope this exchange helps others in the same
boat.

A Win98 LPR client came with my Epson Aculaser C900N. Perhaps it is
available on their support site.

Thanks.

Generally speaking the software will only work with specific brands of
printers or print servers...I know the HP JetAdmin will only work with
HP products. That's why I suggested he download basically the same
thing from Sharp...if it installs without an external print
server...or from the maker of the external print server.
