TCP/IP performance, maximum speed = 65% of 100mbps?

Hi,

When I copy big files from 1 server to another, the maximum speed reached is
65% of my 100mbps network.

I am in full duplex 100mbps mode.

can I improove this?
how to identify why I lose 35%?

thanks.

Jerome.

You'll rarely ever get 100% efficiency, due to many different things.

In other words, don't worry about it, and if you really need more speed, and
your servers can pump the info out fast enough, move to gigabit ethernet
with jumbo frames and NICs that do TCP offloading.

Thats right, but in general, you have also to notice the functions of those
servers, and when that bandwidth reaches a certien value.

in other words, you have to check for services that are running on those
servers, for example, if this server runs IIS 6.0, its bandwidth will differs
from a server that doesnt run IIS at all.

But anyways, as said before, dont worry about that bandwidth and nobody can
reach the ideal bandwith.

thanks.

I know that 100% of usage is not possible,
but from your knowledge, does 65% is good?

Well, I have omit to say that its not "real" servers. Its laptop computers
configured for demo purpose.

Between 2 real servers the usage is 82% to 85%

I'll setup a gigabit switch for my servers and keep my 100mbps switches for
my desktops connections.

very good for a laptop, in addition, being for demo use make you more trust
that no important data will be lost.

New point...

I have connected a new computer through my switch, its a DS5 (Dlink) and
copied 1 big file from 2 desktops. This switch is conected to another one.
my PC1 is connected to switch A the PC2 to switch B

The usage is 82-85% but there is a lot of collisions in my switch A.

I change it to a DSS8+ model, there is no collisions, but the usage is
75%!!!

any idea?

You need more traffic to check such factors on the new switch, more PCs to
check the collusions. if more PCs dont cause collusions, then the 75% is very
good.

Bit of a side line, but, if you have a number of devices connected to a
single ethernet switch, with each device using full duplex, then it isn't
possible to get an ethernet 'collision', as packets would be queued/buffered
by the switch. If ports become very busy, then buffers/queues will fill, but
still there should be no collision.

Or have I missed something??

That's what I was thinking, but I was wondering what would happen if hosts
1-5 were all sending traffic to host 6...but I guess you're right, the
buffers would just fill.

thanks for your comments.

I think I can't do anything, I'm at the top of my performance.

Copying a big file from a server A to a laptop B using another computer C
use 100% of the bandwith of the computer C (50% read 50% write).
but I just realized that in full duplex mode I could use more then "100%"(?)
if I can read & write at the same time...
