TCP/IP missing

I just set up my network card and DSL modem. Everyone
tells me that I need to open "properties" on the "My
Network Places" icon. There I should see somethng for IP
address. But it isn't there. Only 'Configuration',
'Bindings', and 'Advanced' appear on the screen.

So I am told I have to examine the device and see if there
is a TCP/IP next to it. There isn't. So I need to click
on 'Add' and then 'TCP/IP' and 'OK'. Simple enough. But
when I click OK, it goes back to the previous screen and I
still don't have a TCP/IP next to my device. How do I get
this IP address screen so I can enter in all of the crucial
details?

This description stinks, but this has been very complex for
me. Can anyone help?

You're getting some half-baked advice.

There's nowhere in the Network properties that will tell you what your
TCP/IP settings are. Open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /all

then press Enter, for all the gory details.

You won't see TCP/IP -> "Your Network Card" if you only have one network
adapter listed in the list of components. All you'll see is TCP/IP.

Can you describe the problem you're trying to troubleshoot here? Maybe we
can help you there.

Hi Richard,

I am trying to set up my new network card so that I can run my DSL.
The instructions from my provider and from others is that I need to
find someplace to enter the IP addresses provided by the ISP. I can't
find where to do that. I know the DSL service is up and running and I
assume that all I need to do is point the ethernet card in the right
direction.

You set these options by double-clicking the TCP/IP -> (Your Network Card)
entry if it exists, otherwise you just double-click the TCP/IP entry if
that's all you have. From there check the options on the various tabs and
you should find where you need to plug in the various settings.

Thats my problem. My network card shows up in the window, but doesn't
have a TCP/IP option. The only TCP/IP is on my Dial-up adapter. When
I click on the network adapter and hit <add> it gives you the option
to add the TCP/IP, but after I double click on the option, it doesn't
add the connection.

I've thought on this for a while and frankly, am stumped. You might want to
consider removing all networking entries and rebuilding by reinstalling all
the clients and protocols to see if that sorts it out.

Well the proverbial pooch has been screwed. I called Dell and their
advice was similar to yours. We uninstalled the ICP/IP protocol from
the dial-up adapter and then tried to re-install. No luck. So at
this point, I can't even dial in to the net. I had to run to work to
take care of this post.

Do you know where I can download a WindowsME TCP/IP stack?

Thanks

You can't download one but you can rebuild it from your WindowsMe CD or from
the CAB files on your hard drive:
