TalkTalk USB modem

The guy next door has had TalkTalk BB for some time now (yes I know, you
know......)

Anyway, yesterday I was poking about on his machine and although it is "up to
8Mb", speed tests show only two. Now he must have had it long enough to
stabilize but it seems locked at 2Mb.

Now the supplied USB modem powers itself *from the USB connection* so if the
computer is off, which it is for 90% of the time, then the modem is off also.
Could that fact have caused things to stay at 2Mb? If so then a cheap solution
would seem to be running the thing through a powered USB hub - would that work?
I guess it would be cheaper than a "real" modem with power and RJ45 :-)

TIA

Yes it could have caused a BRAS profile to get stuck. Its far more
likely that Talk Talk simply provisioned him at 2Mbps though.

Your plan for the USB modem won't work (probably) as they are
essentially dumb devices which require a computer connected. The old
stingray certainly wouldn't work like that and I can't see anyone
being stupid enough to make a USB modem with "brains" - the whole
point is that they are dirt-cheap.

Anyway of checking short of asking TT? - as if they would know ;-)

If you don't know anything about computers, do your neighbour a favour and
stop messing about with his or giving him incorrect and bad advice. Tell
him to come to this newsgroup and we will all advise him directly - it will
save you putting your own interpretation on things. What's worse is that
each time he asks something, you probably ask here then go running back!
Go and use GOOGLE and learn a bit more about ADSL.

Another know all!
Time to grow up.
There was nothing wrong with the OP reasoning, if you do not wish to help
then shut up!

Coming from someone posting from a TISCALI ADSL connection that is
priceless.

Oh, what a laugh. This from someone who is probably violating the
Tiscali (more laughs) T&Cs by using a false email address.

I've met Dave, and he's probably forgotten more about computers than you
will ever know. He's a good programmer - and I doubt the same applies to
you.

Thanks Bob, and the others, for leaping to my defence. As it happens my
neighbour would probably not even be able to formulate the question, let alone
understand the answer. :-)

To be fair I wasn't leaping to your defence - I just found it VERY
amusing that someone on Tiscali's RETAIL platform was having a pop at
anyone about ADSL knowledge :-D

Usenet is still the barrel of laughs it always was I see
