talktalk problems

I use talktalk broadband. I used to use a (recommended) wireless
router - the speed was fine but the line used to drop every 25-30
minutes. then I moved the phone socket (the main one) and used a modem
(the recommended sagem one). the speed is terrible (sometimes 28kbps,
never more than 1mega) and the line often drops every 5-6 secs over a
30 minutes period and then won't drop for hours.

customer services say that perhaps its because the modem is too close
to a printer or that I've got messages on the phone line (!) neither
of these affects by signal at work (although about a week ago i had
the same problems at work, but they got better after I re-installed
modem). I've re-installed my home modem from the talktalk disk and the
sagem website, but with no luck

any suggestions??

Peter

You could always try and leave TalkTalk and go with a proper ISP.
Unfortunately even if you do it properly and owe them nothing TalkTalk
and their recovery agents will probably hound you for years for
imaginary bills.

When I was with TalkTalk (managed to escape without fee after 2.5 months) my
connection would drop 20 - 30 times an hour, downloads would crawl and other
problems, yet previously with Pipex and then afterwards with Pipex again,
never an issue, solid and quick connection. (Now on xBlueyonder).

However, I use talktalk at my workplace and the connection is fine
(5megs min - no line drops) and that's only 4-5 miles away (probably
different exchange admitadely). What I don't know is if it's the
talktalk or the modem. Is there any way to test?

To test, just borrow someone else's modem or modem / router.

I had bought myself an ADSL modem/router, which worked no problem on Pipex,
switched to TalkTalk and nothing but problems, tried their supplied modem,
tried the modem supplied by Pipex, no difference. TalkTalk admitted their
network was crap and let me go without charge, they had for the 2.5 months I
was with them refunded the monthly fee, by way of credits. Though they did
later try and bill me for about 5 months for a service I didn't have, I made
sure I had cancelled the DD, so they couldn't take the money, eventually
after calling each month for around 5 months they stopped asking for money
for a service I didn't have.

there have been occaisions where auxilary PC equipment hs caused an
interferrence signal to affect the level of DSL (dis, in your case) service.
So it is not unknown.

I'll leave it to the rest to tell you what they think of Talk Talk..

Look back in this group a couple of weeks. There was a discussion
about the MTU size for TalkTalk.
I use 1400 which improved my connection.
However, the symptoms I had were different to yours.

I was so annoyed at having to download files at dialup speeds that
I've gone back to wireless for a few days (ever tried to download
adobe at 192kps!). It's working pretty well although I'd prefer to go
back to a modem. If the wireless works well it can't be a fault of the
network, so I'm trying freecycle for another modem - or is this a daft
idea??
