When I was with the for 3 months (3 months too long) a couple of years
ago (when they first started up broadband) they were sniffing the
traffic and if it was P2P it was being shaped so much you would be lucky
to get 0.5k/s, they didn't have the infrastructure in place all those
years back, though after about 8+ months they decided to not be so heavy
handed, however as they are taking on many more customers, when they
have never had the infrastructure to cope, things can only get worse, so
it wouldn't surprise me if they are going to shape the traffic so much
it goes back to standstill, it has always been highlighted if you wanted
to use P2P then don't use TalkTalk, it could however be that the
trackers you are using have gone offline.

Try changing port to one used by VOIP and aslo use encription, see if that
does any good.

If not gat another ISP, Zen block or shape nothing.

Yes,

I think they are blocking torrents. When I first joined in May 2006,
the download rate was not brilliant, but it worked. Then sometime
during August 2006 the kbs dropped altogether. I discovered I was
still able to download overnight (between 1am and 8.30am), but now even
that has become impossible. I tried changing the port settings, and
this helped a for a while, but the download rate is still awful.

In my opinion, Talktalk are now honouring their contract which states
that users can download up to 40gigs per month. It is now impossible
to do this. I am too busy to get into an argument with talktalk or to
bother complaining -- so the best thing to do is simply to make posts
in groups like this and hope other people pick up on it. If talktalk
begins to receive enough bad publicity, it will put people off from
signing up.

For anyone considering signing up to the talktalk International 3
service -- don't do it, it's crap. The contract is 18 months minimum
and it costs £70 to get out of it.

If you are already a user and are experiencing the same problem, post
your complaints here or start similar threads.

I suspect you mean "are not honouring" rather than "are now honouring"

It may still be possible, just not easy to do using protocols which they
consider unsuitable for their network. It is probably difficult, if not
impossible, to prove your case, so you'd be likely to lose if you made
any formal complaint about them.

Some clients (such as BitComet) support protocol encryption. Might be
worth checking that option out.

I pay for my broadband (I wouldn't go near TalkTalk if they paid me to),
including a premium for near unlimited usage. And my PC is self-built
from components bought new.

I happen to enjoy anime. I'll throw you an example. Find me a supplier of
OFFICIAL DVDs of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" with either English
audio or subtitle track (don't say eBay, the ones there are copies of the
fansubs) and I'll happily get them instead of downloading the
fan-subtitled version.

And I abide with the fansubbers' requests in that when an anime series is
eventually licensed I buy the DVDs and nuke my fansub copy. However many
series do not get distributed by official channels outside of Japan.
BitTorrent is the *only* way to catch them.

(Yes, I'm aware CDjapan.co.jp sell the DVDs of Haruhi - but they don't
have either English audio or subtitles.)

Second example. http://www.knoppix.net/get.php

That uses BitTorrent for distribution. Your initial accusation is that
anyone who uses it is only after free music and videos. Now hold your
claim up to that site. If you wish to maintain your position then I
suggest you complain to the people hosting knoppix.net (I'll make your
life easy: try databasemart.net) that they're using BitTorrent to
distribute DVD and CD images of Linux operating system.

BitTorrent is used because it is FAST and it is EFFICIENT. Of course some
people will abuse it but just because some people use it for illegal
distribution DOES NOT MEAN that everyone who uses (or wants to use)
BitTorrent is some kind of thief.

Since when? Did I miss that 'improvement' to it then? It''s probably because
it's slow and inefficient (and largely used by thieves and freeloaders) that
some ISP's block it. Since when was a format that uploads more than it downloads
ever 'EFFICIENT' as you put it.

If not a thief then a freeloader as a rule. Perhaps there is quality paid-for
software out there that is distributed by BT.............

If you connect to a tracker with few people on it then yes it will be
slow. If there are enough on it (such as just after the new release of a
fansub) then it will generally run as fast as my line can carry the
packets. It is distributed, so no one central point is being overloaded by
the hundreds of thousands of people wanting to get the same file. And yet
most if not all of these people can download as fast as their lines can
manage. It is in this way I mean it is fast and efficient.

Looking at bittorrent.com I'd be inclined to agree, not for software but
for paid-for media content. There's also quality free software (e.g.
Knoppix) that can be distributed in this manner, because of its
efficiencies I mentioned above it's not hammering one central point of
contact, so there's less cost impact on someone (in this example, Klaus
Knopper) when the software is totally and legally free.

(There is no such thing as a pirate copy of Knoppix.)
