Ok, I should know this, I know, y'know, but... I've got TalkTalk broadband
(but I'm prepared to admit it, that must count for something) and I'm
thinking (as I'm sure many people do) about switching. Thing is, I can't
find anything about there being a contract period and the (dire?) penalties
incurred if I try to escape before I've done my time.

Anyone know anything about this? Any succesful escapees out there with
stories to tell?

12 months. Don't do it. They have astonishingly low customer satisfaction
numbers.
