I'm tearing my hair out with the above move. I have bought a new
laptop and an accompanying netgear router. I thought it would be a
simple matter to set up the new system and fit a wireless card to my
old laptop for family use when the new kit was on line. HUH! no such
luck.
Can anyone give a step by step way of achieving my aim? The new kit
will not get past CHAP when trying to go on-line

John

Sorry - I should have specified the router is a netgear DG834GTUK and
the new laptop runs Vista

Have you put in the correct "Connection Username" and "Connection Password"
in the router, where it is required for the ADSL connection? The CHAP
failure would suggest that you haven't. Note that the connection username
may well not be the same as your email address - it will be defined on the
correspondence you received from your ISP when you first set up the account.

of upper and lower case...

Yes I located the original documentation and confirm I am using the
correct data

I have looked on various sites via google. The general consensus of
opinion gave little help and a sick feeling this might be a long
haul :-(

I've recently connected a wireless router to TalkTalk - it took me
some time!

I suggest you first connect your PC to the router via an Ethernet
cable to get basic internet access working, so you can ignore the
wireless aspect for now. As said by others, you need to enter your
username (based on your phone number) and password.

Have a look at question "I am a Windows Vista user; how do I set up my
modem?" on the TalkTalk website. Its describing how to setup their
modem without using their Connect-and-go CD. It should help you
whether or not you are using Vista.

Thank you for that reference. I am now posting via the new wireless
link from my old laptop which I have treated to a wireless card and
have also connected the new laptop to the router.
I still need to get the email working correctly on the new laptop but
for the moment yahoo mail is fine

John

I recently got a Netgear router and found the best way to set it up was
manually. I tried the installation auto setup and found that it wouldn't let
me connect via wireless from my laptop in the lounge but as soon as I setup
manually, all was well.

As I shall be setting up a DG834G this week (but with Entanet, not
TalkTalk) I'm interested in why only manual setup allowed the laptop to
connect wirelessly.
Can anyone suggest what option in 'manual' was not done in 'auto'?
