A tale of broadband woe

Sorry if this comes under the heading of FAQs, but I need some
clarification...

I can't get ADSL. I signed up with P***Net when I moved into my new
house, way back in August, after initial "checks" suggested my line
could support 2mb. It didn't take long to ascertain that my line is
actually good for nothing as I am too far from the exchange - the BT
engineer recently measured the loss at 82db. Of course, P***Net seem to
have a problem understanding this, so they are still charging me for a
service I have never had.

Anyway, even if I ever resolve the fiasco with P***Net, that still
leaves me without broadband and looking for alternatives to ADSL.

So, I was wondering about SDSL. I've checked and my exchange is already
enabled for SDSL, so I need to know if it is likely to be worth
investigating further.

How is the technology behind SDSL different to ADSL? Is it a different
technology altogether or is it just "two-way ADSL"?

Does the line length problem that stops me having ADSL mean that I won't
be able to have SDSL either?

And is SDSL still prohibitively expensive, or is there some ISP that
will be able to give me a good deal as a private user (ie not a business)?

I guess I also need to know what other options are available to me.
There is a local organisation that provides a wi-fi network but
unfortunately I am outside its coverage.

I have also thought about ISDN, but I am led to believe that line length
will again cause problems there. Is this the case?

I have also looked at the possibility of satellite broadband, but it is
way beyond my budget. :-(

Any advice that might lead to me getting a broadband connection will be
very gratefully received. But I'm not holding my breath...

d.

it does, SDSL goes less far for a given speed than ADSL.
www.bt.com/broadband has an SDSL checker that works on your address.

it'll be out of range, but at £100/month its more than satellite.

talking to them about a point to point wireless extension may be your
best bet, what postcode are you in ?

it does have a distance limit and is expensive to run, uk.telecom may
help with distance if nobody pops up here that knows.

Sorry but with a loop attenuation 0f 82dB there is little chance of you
getting any type of DSL at all..

Post the above on plusnet.service.customer.feedback. Their CS are likely to
pick it up & sort it for you.

Hm, talking directly to the people that provide the service - there's an
idea! it may just be worth trying! :-)

Will try, thanks.

Thanks, but I'm beyond expecting anything resembling "customer service"
from PissNet. They have let me down badly. They could have sorted out
this problem months ago if they really wanted to. They have had ample
opportunity.

I can testify to the fact they've gone down the nick this last few months.

As you're no doubt aware, the 'service' you're entitled to now is the one
that stops them from charging you for something they're not providing, &
also a full refund of all monies you've paid.

I suggest that posting on that group will be the quickest way to achieve
that. I'm certainly not suggesting that you persevere with them.
I gave the wrong address BTW it's plusnet.service.customer-feedback.

Anyway, let's know how you get on.

Regards.

Cheers. I've more or less given up hope of getting anywhere with the
evil thieving bastards but I will give your suggestion a try. And I'll
let you know how I get on. If it works, you can be assured of my undying
gratitutde forever!

Hi, if you don't want to post into plusnet.service.customer-feedback
regarding this, make sure there's a ticket on your account and then post the
ticket number here, so that someone can investigate the issue for you.
