I'm looking at setting up a VPN at the office, so I can log on from home,
and although everyone tells me how simple it is, I'm looking for some good reference material, on how to do it on a LAN with a 2003 server, before I start mucking up the network :-) I did a google search and found hundreds of links, but the two dozen, or so, that I followed, were very general, without specific detailed info. Any books that anyone is aware of? On-Line reference material? Anything will help. UGModeler |

If you mean you connect to a modem at the remote site, you do not need
VPN. You just dial into the modem on the remote server. You do not need VPN, because you already have a similar connection to your server. If you mean you connect to the Internet by a dialup modem, you don't need anything extra. The VPN starts the dialup to your ISP, then makes the VPN connection over the Internet connection. Personally, my preference is to use a firewall appliance that supports
proprietary IPSec VPN....I like Sonicwalls for this. Less load on the server. Thanks. I looked at the information, and it's useful, probably more so to
someone much brighter than me :-( I'll take a look at the other references posted, as well (thanks to everyone), but I guess I'm trying to answer some basic questions, before I get too far. I can follow the VPN set-up steps (like a monkey <smile>), but I'm not sure I have all the pieces in place, yet. 1. The 2003 server is the domain controller, and is connected to the network through a simple switch, through its on-board NIC. 2. The DSL modem is connected to a wirelles router, which is also connected to the same switch. 3. In setting up the VPN, do I need to somehow use the second NIC on the 2003 box? Connect it to what? 4. The DSL modem connection has a fixed IP address (which I believe is a prerequisite), but the 2003 fixed IP address is only visible within the LAN (since the only address visible to the outside is the DSL modem one). 5. The plan is to use the 2003 server also as the VPN connection. Since it's already the domain controller, is that a wise move, or should I do something different? I'll also go an take a look at the new Microsoft book on VPNs, that some poster suggested. May be they have additional details in it. I wish someone had written a "VPN for Dummies" book ;-) Thansk, again. -- "Robert L [MS-MVP]" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:(E-Mail Removed)... > try this http://www.ms-mvps.com/ >vpn setup. > > -- > For more and other information, go to http://www.ms-mvps.com > > Don't send e-mail or reply to me except you need consulting services. > Posting on MS newsgroup will benefit all readers and you may get more help. > > Robert Lin, MS-MVP, MCSE & CNE > Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN, Anti-Virus, Tips & Troubleshooting on > http://www.ms-mvps.com > This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties. > > "UGModeler" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message > news:28af7$4017c015$42a70da1$(E-Mail Removed) ervers.com... > > I'm looking at setting up a VPN at the office, so I can log on from home, > > and although everyone tells me how simple it is, I'm looking for some good > > reference material, on how to do it on a LAN with a 2003 server, before I > > start mucking up the network :-) > > > > I did a google search and found hundreds of links, but the two dozen, or > so, > > that I followed, were very general, without specific detailed info.
