My department (an R & D department) wants to create a small secure server to
experiment with online assessment (we're an educational organisation). We're not planning on hosting any actual ("operational") assessments -- just sample assessments to research various aspects of online assessments (and remote access to them). We asked the IT guys to spec a system and they're planning on purchasing a small server and software (Windows 2000 Server). How much can we expect to pay for a firewall? The server is to be kept separate from out main system so it needs it's own firewall. Thanks in anticipation. Bobby Bobby |

Anywhere from free software versions to thousands of dollars for a hardware
appliance. You might try zone alarm to see if they have a free server version or google for "free firewall". hth DDS W 2k MVP MCSE "Bobby" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:%(E-Mail Removed)... > My department (an R & D department) wants to create a small secure server to > experiment with online assessment (we're an educational organisation). What's the difference between a hardware firewall and a software firewall?
What one would you recommend for this application? And can you give me *typical* prices for each type (for non-critical applications)? Cheers. Instead of Windows 2000, have them spec Windows Server 2003 because it
includes an Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). -- Thanks, Marc Reynolds Microsoft Technical Support This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. If your IT department changes to Windows Server 2003, it comes with it's own
Firewall, which is the same one on WindowsXP. This is a good firewall. As far as going for a top firewall like Checkpoint, I just priced one for a client. Nokia IP40 Satellite 16 Base System 720.00 , Nokia Annual Access 7x24 support 150.00 , Checkpoint software subscrition 120.00 , Annual Firewall support contracts for 5 day x 8 hrs for Checkpoint run around 1,500.00 "Bobby" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:%(E-Mail Removed)... > My department (an R & D department) wants to create a small secure server to > experiment with online assessment (we're an educational organisation). I'm being quoted £10,000 ($17,500) for the firewall. Maybe it's a real wall?

But a smaller dedicated hardware firewall would serve you fine, even a SOHO size unit such as those from SonicWall. Firewalls like Nokia Checkpoint and Cisco Systems PIX can go that high in
price and more. Firewalls look at every packet that comes into a LAN, and can route it. If you have 9,000 users then you need something like that for the capacity. But 17,000 bucks for a firewall to secure one server sounds scandalous. I think you should get a second opinion.
