Default remote desktop connection problems

i have "allow users to connect remotely to this computer"
checked in my system properties and i have port 3389
forwarded to the server, yet i cannot connect remotely.
if i try to telnet to the server on port 3389 while at the
console it does not even connect. so it appears that my
server is not even trying to accept the connections. when
i attempt to use the RDC client application i get an
error "remote desktop disconnected": "the client could not
connect to the remote computer........" it seems to me it
should work properly, but i poked around in gpedit.msc and
changed some settings, none of which resulted in fixing
this. any other ideas? what have i done this time?
thanks!

If you are running RRAS then check the inbound and outbound
filters on the external NIC it is possible they are filtering port 3389.
Open RRAS admin then expand "Ip routing" / General and open the
properties of the external NIC.

Open a dos prompt on the server and run netstat -a
and verify the server is listening on port 3389.

The port is not open. Check the advanced tcp/ip properties
and verify the port is not being filtered.

i did a repair of my win2k3 install and now it is
working. i wonder: what could have caused it to stop
functioning properly?
