Problem rejoining PC to domain

Hi,
I recenty got a call out for a laptop that would not rejoin a domain.
The laptop was stolen from the office and then recovered a couple of
days later
Initially it was on the domain as I set it up to start with. But since
it has come back it will not rejoin. I took it back to X workgroup and
then attempted to place it back into X domain. Everytime it askes for
the authority username & password (to rejoin domain) it comes up with
the following error:
"The following error occured attempting to join the doamin 'X': An
internal error occured.
Now I have hunted high an low for answers on this one with any luck. So
last friday I rang Microsoft tech support the guy on the other end,
without any attemp to resolve an issue, wanted to pass me through to a
higher level technician @ AU$248.00 for this problem. Well I told him
thanks, but NO thanks (do they not get enough money from us
already????)

I would love any help or suggestions that I could get.
