OT (ish) - PC can't deliver web pages.

This might be a bit OT but it is broadband-ish.

As recommended here a friend of mine has joined Plusnet. I can connect
via my laptop plugged into her router and view web pages no problem. She
however cannot, though we can view the router admin just fine from her
machine.

I've gone through the routine of setting up things as best I know in
Windows XP but to no avail.

Could someone give me an idea of tests to run to see where the problem
lies please. I assume 'pinging' something is in order here along with
whatever else, trouble is I'm none to clued up.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of router and is she connecting via a wire or wireless? Also
which operating system?
Sit her down infront of your computer and she can then give info on what she
is doing as a few
things need to be checked, so it will be handy to have her computer next to
the one she is using.
It will save you having to keep going over or asking questions constantly!
It would make more sense for her to phone the customer support line,
providing people didn't
suggest a crap package were she has to pay loads. All she will do is blame
the person who
suggested using that particular ISP.
Someone else was asking a very similar question for a "customer" in one fo
the groups - but I
don't believe free information should be sold on.

OK the things to try are:

1. Set your laptop up beside her computer and compare her settings wth yours
in Internet Explorer - Tools | Internet Options, looking at the settings on
all the tabsheets.

2. Open a Comand Prompt - Start | Run | cmd

At the c:\> prompt, run the following commands

a) ping news.bbc.co.uk
b) ping 212.58.226.20

Both should respond "Reply from..." four times. If not, post the error
messages here.

c) ipconfig /all

The gateway and DNS and DHCP servers should all be the same - probably
192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 - the address of the router.

3. Browse to the router's address and find the status page which shows the
WAN IP, gateway and DNS (details depend on which router she's got) and try
pinging the gateway and DNS server IP addresses (as in section 2 above).

Also check that firewall software isn't accidently blocking the browser.
This is probably more applicable to Norton and other addon software -
I caught Norton (dash spit) doing that last week to someone's PC, and
temporarily disabling the firewall got the browsing back.

Following on from that a little, just check that she has not accidentally
activated any Internet locks with Norton or other firewall software.

I did disable Windows firewall as part of the testing.

I think I am getting where you are coming from now.

She is able to get online with dial up
She is able to browse the router config page with a browser
She is unable to browse websites

Can I ask, has she actually got the router connected to her ISP? That is,
correct setting, username and password and other service such as email
working?

I think one of the early responses said a second machine could connect
to the net without a problem...

Good call though !

Just to throw in another suggestion - try OffByOne - it's a tiny
stand-alone browser that might highlight issues elsewhere with the
normal browser.
