I need to run a CAT6 solid UTP cable from the top room of my house to
the bottom (living room). Wireless won't do it, I'm afraid. I'm thinking it would be OK to run the cable down the outside of the house, but would it get eaten by the weather? I live in Britain, so the temperature extremes would not be much. I'd tack it to the brickwork with plastic tabs to keep it in place. Or do I need to run it through a duct or some kind of weather shielding? Any tips appreciated. Jonathan Jonathan |

I've since seen this: http://www.duxcw.com/faq/network/outside.htm The concerns mainly seem to be about lightning though. |

I've done it on 2 out of 3 home installations I have done (I move to much!!) - the 1 exception it wasn't really necessary, it was easier to keep wires internal. One installation was done ~7 years ago - I ran the wires from one ground floor room, right round outside of house to another downstairs room (hence quite a bit of cable - in home install terms anyway). Because it was ground floor the cable is hidden from light, but is exposed to water (well, damp - probably more so than a ground-loft cable). Its all still working fine. The other installation was completed ~6months ago - hence ask me in 10 years time..... (by which point I will have moved on). As for wireless - I think cable is the best way to do things! If you're going to do something, do it properly. Although wireless does have its purposes - sitting in the garden working. I will probably install a wireless point when the sun comes out.
