Default 10/100/1000mbps speeds?

< I've seen 10/100 for a long time, but is the 100/1000 even
possible? >

I've been using gigabit switches (10/100/1000) for nearly five years
now. The best application is transferring gigantic video files. Works
best if Cat6 cable is installed, otherwise it falls back to 10/100.

So is it literally impossible (even at point blank range w/ no
obstructions) to get that upper speed using wireless?

In a technical, sense of semantics, fiber optic cable is wireless (no
wires) and has blazing speed above all other transmission protocols.
It is transmission over dedicated light bands. But I know you are
referring to 802.11xx, and I just don't see how gigabit speed is
possible given the limitations of electromagnetic wave physics. There
may be another breakthrough in data compression algorithms that gets
the throughput closer to the higher speeds; this is the usual
technique used at pushing the speed barriers on low-end IEEE
requirements. I don't think many speed improvements over wireless are
realistic until scientists unlock the secrets of subspace and
wormholes. But I've been wrong before . . .
