Good afternoon. We have a Windows 2003 domain with multiple DHCP servers on
it. Client workstations get their DNS, gateway (router), etc. from the DHCP scope. I need to update and change some of the information in the scope and need the change to apply to the user workstations. My lease time is currently set to 7 days. If I change the DNS entries in DHCP, how long will it take for the clients to be updated? Do I have to wait until the client tries to renew the DHCP lease? Thanks in advance for any assitance, UCG UnderCoverGuy |

Hello UnderCoverGuy,
After the half of the lease time, the client will try to renew it's ip. So in your case if you change the settings and a client was powered on the same time after 3,5 days it will try to renew it's settings. The other way is to shutdown/restart all workstations remote after you change the scope settings and then with the startup they get the new settings. So you can use the shutdown.exe from MS to remote shutdown/restart the workstations at close of business. Thanks for the reply. That looks like that is what I am going to have to do.
Just wish that MS (or someone) could set up DHCP so that updates can be centrally "pushed" out to the client versus the client pulling the information down. Thanks again, UCG |

Hello UnderCoverGuy,
That is nothing that is MS special. DHCP is a Standard that evrybody uses, see here: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2131.html Also you could lower down your lease time, to get updates faster pushed out. We use a lease time from 8 hours and it is not that much traffic going over the network during the lease refresh, especially the clients will not refresh the same time. Your clients will not start working at the same millisecond.:-) Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups ** HELP us help YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > Thanks for the reply.
