I have a windows 98 machine with a netgearWG111v2.54Mbps Wireless USB
2.0 adapter. I have an open network that I can access with a borrowed XP computer, but when I try with ye old 98 machine. the adapter finds the network, connects and assigns an IP address, but still brings up the page not found for any site. I set it to be at the same connection speed as the XP PC. Any Idears cynthia@agmeters.com |

Any Idears So the group has an idea of what might need checked: First would be to check your firewall for allowance of the new addressing range. Check by using winipcfg [using the RUN box], noting the adapter's addressing and information, and then checking the firewall for that allowance.. If the computers were previously networked you may need to re-do the local network allowances to use the new range provided by the router.. Might also want to check any Anti-Virus/SpyWare/other programs which might be running as proxy for Internet access. Also check in IE or other browser for its use of a proxy. IE settings are accessed via Tools > Connections > LAN settings. Also note whether it has been configured to DIAL a connection rather than using the network. Can the XP computer and/or router be pinged from the 98 box? How about when you ping an Internet site? -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com _________ |

Cynthia, even though you disabled Norton, it is not really disabled. If what you have is the Internet suite, then you have a firewall. Your ping failures for the local network indicate interference, likely by Norton. I happen to be one who dislikes Norton, but IF you have a paid subscription, first retrieve your registration numbers and KEY. Check on Norton/Symantec web site as different versions have different retrieval techniques.. Also pickup the cleanup tool while your there. After obtaining those and saving them {if you want to re-install} UNINSTALL Norton [don't use the Internet without protection], and then try the local pings again after a restart and post the results. What did winipcfg show? Here's a reference link for some basic information: http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com/re...NETWORKING.htm -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com _________ <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:32d18969-2cef-4f30-bff3-(E-Mail Removed)...
