Default squid proxy, client asks for password too often

Hi,
we are using squid proxy from a debian apache2 server. On the users'
side Firefox asks very often (every 10-20mins) for the user name +
password. Could anyone please suggest a configuration parameter that
would allow us to raise this time?
Thank you,
illes

Are we talking about their user name and password to access the proxy?
Or are we talking about a user name and password to access the web
service? Is the web server asking them for the password or is the
proxy?

Nobody has any idea what you're talking about unless you tell them.
What is the proxy's purpose?

User name and pwd are asked for by the proxy server. Squid is
listening only on its designated port. The proxy server runs on a
university computer and its purpose is to offer library services to
employees when they are using their home computers.
Thanks.
