Modem Alert light flashing red

I have a Comtrend CT-301 and a Linksys WRT300n and my alert light on the
adsl modem will flash red every 4-5 mins but if I remove the linksys it
doesn't flash I tried it with a D-link router and it still flashes. Anyone
know why or a fix? I'm running Vista Ultimate btw.
