How can I rename a networked printer

I have several network printers that I want to rename on the server (change
name not the share).

Currently if I rename a printer on the server, the clients recieve errors
that the printer was not found. If I change the name back to what it was
everything is fine.

Is this possible to rename the printers or do I need to rename the printer
and have my users delete and re-add the printers back with the new name?

We are on Windows 2003 R2.
