Default Unable to map network drive

I am in high hopes that someone can help me here. I've got several Windows
98 machines that I am unable to map a network drive on. These machines seem
to have limitations on what shares it can see on the file server. In
explorer I can even hand type the path to what I know is a valid network
share and it just fails to see it.

I can get the windows 2000 machines to do this just fine. How can these
machines see one share, but not the other? It just doesn't make sense to me.

You may be having difficulties with consecutive connections. If prior
connections are not released, you will not be able to map the drives.
If you disable auto-disconnection and you are running a workgroup, you may
easily hit the limit (10 connections for workgroup).

This might help:

You might also have issues with: permissions, network settings. firewalls,
and ports. Have you ensured that all is set correctly?

iirc there is a limitation in win98 on the number of characters you
can use in share names. I think it's 12. I can't remember whether
spaces are okay or not.

I was successfully able to get 1 of the 3 windows 98 machines mapped via
windows explorer but the other 2 just won't do it. I keep getting a message
saying that it can't find the share, retype or use the start/find.

I then trying using NET USE E:\\Usesinas01\Ank_Instrument_Data\GC\Public and
it tells me the syntax is incorrect, I then tried NET USE/? and it only sees
net, if I type net help it shows NET USE to be a valid command.

This is so frustrating. What am I missing here?

iirc there is also a limitation which only lets you map a drive to
\\server\share

ie. you can't map to a subdirectory of a share point. In the above
example "Public" would have to be the share and you would map to
\\Usesinas01\public

Very inflexible, I know.

For the record what you're saying is sort of correct, but it turns out I
guess there might be a limitation on the amount of letters. I was able to
share the directory directly below the share.
