My Computer Is Not Seeing Network Card

I just got a computer from a friend and went to hook it up, everything works
good from what I can see but it is not seeing my network card or my adsl
modem.
I am running windows ME on a p2-433 with a gig of ram and 2 hard drives.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Does the NIC show up in Device Manager? Did you try another PCI slot?

are there any lights on the back of the nic? one should (if there )blink
occasionally because it's polling (looking for a network) also try a new cable
