Default Virgin setup HELP

Ok so I didn't listen and went ahead with the install of Virgin BB!! Well
it hasn't got off to the best of starts. The man in a van today installed
the cable but I'm having problems with the CD setup. Everything appears to
install ok and I connect the Ethernet cable when instructed (which it
detects) but I then keep getting connection error message saying; We regret
we are unable to connect your computer to our systems at this time. Cancel
setup and try again later. Error number 800. I've now tried loads of times
but still nothing!

Anyone know what's going on? The supplied cable modem has a steady enet,
sync & ready light but I can't get any further with the cd setup. Luckily I
still have a live ADSL line which connects ok when I plug in the Ethernet.
Am I doing something wrong or is there a manual way to setup and get
started?

No need for the disk!
connect modem to pc by ethernet cable , reboot cable modem then the PC --
presuming Windows XP

So it's MAC address has been registered on the network, and the modem is
live.

You don't need the CD, you should be connected. The CD just lets you set up
an email address and install the VM AV software, but it's not essential.

You've answered your own question. Forget the CD as others have told you.

I just spent the best part of half a day getting a friend's Orange Livebox
working after someone else "helped" her by sticking the "install" CD in.

Thanks for the replies but unfortunately still no joy. I even borrowed my
sisters laptop to eliminate any probs with my PC but that still won't
connect. It detects the local area connection when the Ethernet is
connected but still no activity. If the sync & ready light is lit on the
cable modem does that mean I should be ready to connect or does it need to
be activated first at their end?

There is possibly a single URL that you can reach to activate the
connection - at least that was the case with the ex-NTL area. ex-TW
should work as soon as you have plugged everything in & power cycled.

I can't for the life of me recall that URL, though.

If you have a VM phone line, you could connect via dial-up & ask for
help in the dedicated virginmedia.support.broadband.cable internal
newsgroup

They need to activate it before it will work - NTL always used to forget to
do that. Give customer services a call and explain you're hooked up but
they haven't switched you on. It will take a few hours before it will work.
You don't need the CD unless you don't know how to set up new email accounts
etc. It will all be on the help pages once it is working.
It's really annoying when they can't be bothered telling customers the
process.

Yes I think that's the problem, during setup it should have opened up a
dedicated page for me to enter the name & Pin they sent me to activate it
but it failed! Any backdoor way in to this?
