Default Virgin Media broadband performance



Hi Folks,

Anyone here as daft as me still haning in there waiting for Virgin
Media to avail themselves of some more bandwidth ?

I know, I know what you;re gonna say.."you still with those jokers"..

It's OK early in the morning and very late at night (stupid O'clock)

Seems that whenever ordinbary mortals want to use their broadband then
they just haven't got enought to go round.

I've spoken to their guys in UK tech support and they say that they
are throttling everyones connections, not just a handful of folks as
per their blurb.

Perhaps I should fire an e-mail to Ofcom and see where that gets me..

As am I, however, although I am occasionally frustrated by STM, an
equivalent non-managed connection would cost a fair bit more than the
£37 per month I'm paying now.

I can't see anywhere that indicates they only manage a handful of
folks........unless you mean the quoted top 5% of users..? This 5% is
completely dynamic & doesn't apply to the same 5% all the time. The
statement merely tries to get across that 5% of the users will be
affected between 4pm &midnight.

Or not.

One other thing - your IP address indicates that you're on Virgin's
ADSL service. AFAIK, they haven't introduced STM on ADSL....have they?

yes,they do use STM on their ADSL offering, but they only apply it to those
causing the problem. Pity they don't do that on their cable service.

My experience of Ofcom, toothless for individual cases.
Most contracts give no guarantee of acceptable service
once you are suckered into a long contract.
Ofcom write to the service provider asking them to respond
to your complaint within 3 weeks.
Nothing happens.
No law has been broken, AFAIK there is no industry
wide code of practice, so what can Ofcom do?

Just vote with your feet at the earliest opportunity,
and perhaps pay a bit more for a decent service, and
decent customer service.

Hopefully you're not silly enough to be paying for a shit service?

How good (?) are Virgin at providing MAC information so one can 'move on'?

Also do Virgin allow one to 'downgrade' to dialup service to keep e-mail
addresses? (receiving through Virgin and dialling in occasionally to
keep account 'alive' while posting via the new ISP - which is what I do)

At one stage Tiscali wouldn't allow that as they realised what was
happening as people went off to alternative BB suppliers.

Not according to the guys I spoke to at UK premium tech support.

They said that they are throttling everyone now, not just the top
5%..that was yesterdays news.

Mind you you have to speak to the right people to get them to admit to
that.

I'm not a big downloader by any means, don't play games, I mainly use
my connection for remote site management, VPN/RDP etc etc.

So to see my connection being chopped away is frustrating to say the
least.

I do pop onto You Tube now and again, curiously it appears that
something was blocking You Tube over the weekend.
I could get onto other sites OK but not You Tube.

I did a modem dial up on my PC and You Tube was working OK.

They appear to have been doing it since the new Virgin Media/Telewest
merger thing.

I have a couple of friends who are on Telewest cable and they say it's
completely gone down the pan since it's merger/takeover by Virgin
Media.
