Default Not getting 20mb with Netgear

I'm on a 20mb broadband service, but I don't seem to be able to achieve 20mb
with my wireless Netgear networking hardware :-(

I have a WGT624 v2 wireless router and a WG311T wireless network card and I
can only achieve somewhere between 10mb and 13mb downloads. However, if I
connect the cable modem to the network card built into my motherboard via a
CAT cable I can achieve 20mb downloads. Does anyone know how I can achieve
this download speed with my Netgear hardware?

Thanks,
Dave

It's not the hardware but the quality of the ADSL connection. The
speeds are "UP TO" 20MB and that depends on several key factors.

He said he gets 20Mb/s at the modem, but not over WiFi.

The problem with PCI wireless cards is that they tend to be screened by
the PC case. Try using a USB dongle on the end of an extension lead so
you can position it better.

As I stated I get 20mb when my PC is connected directly to the cable modem,
I get less if connected via my wireless router so the problem, it would
appear, is with my wireless network.

As mentioned before, several key factors come into play. Basically,
signal quality (not necessarily strength) and what other data is being
transferred on the Wifi LAN at the time.

I would assume that the signal quality is ok but I have no way of telling.
The PC and Router are only about 4 meters from each other. There was no
other data being transferred at the time I carried out the tests.

There wouldn't happen to be a plasterboard wall or ceiling between them,
would there?

Yes, there is a plasterboard wall between them.

Foil-backed no doubt, attenuating the signal. Use ethernet.
