Thanks you all so bloody much for helping me out with this older but much
loved Windows ME personal computer.

I just went out and spent some future hard earned money on a new PC complete
with Windows XP operating system.

Seems I may have a bit of a problem on my hands.

I've shared my entire old hard disk out from my Window ME machine, plugged
my shiny new PC into the same Ethernet switch, but I cannot seem to find
said PC anywhere.

Did I do something wrong? Look in the wrong place? Not reboot enough?

I have about 100 gb of files that I'd like off that old box onto the new
one, and I can't seem to be able to find it using Network Neighborhood.

Any help would be read, appreciated, and responded to.
Thanks ahead of time.

Start by disabling the Windows XP firewall and uninstalling any
non-Microsoft firewall software on either PC, then see if you can see your
computers on the network.

Have you made sure the two machines have unique names and are in the same
workgroup?

Have you checked the TCP/IP settings to make sure that the two machines are
on the same subnet?

Thanks, that seemed to work. Copied my stuff.

But, how come I can't see my 'Widnows' folder on the WinMe PC?

Just wondering.....

I guess I could just go the console on the WinME PC and move those
folders/files to a location I can see, but it seems a little strange.

(Or maybe I just can't spell? Thanks in advance)

I am using a wireless router with a built in switch as my path point. This
device is handling the doling out of IPs, thank goodness, because I really
can't make heads or tails out of the gobble-de-gook that is subnets and
such.

But, most of the stuff is working now, thanks.

By default, Windows XP Home Edition does not share certain folders; that may
be what you're seeing if the Me computer can't see things on XP.
