Data transfer speeds

I've currently got around 40GB of files copying from my PC (XP Pro) to my
brother's laptop (Vista Home Premium) running through my Linksys WRT54GS
wireless router - Cat5, not wireless.

It's currently chugging along at 1.64MB/Sec, has been going now for 2 hours
and is reporting another 7 hours to go!

Is this the going rate for that amount of data? Seems painfully slow to me
for a hard wire set up!

Even a slow wi-fi connection is likley to be faster than your maximum
broadband
download speed.

Unless the files are small (like a few KB each), that's pretty slow. You
should expect 8MB/s or more on recent computers over 100Mbit Ethernet.

I was also thinking 8-10MB/s myself, but can't figure out exactly where the
bottleneck is. I've moved 20-30GB over my wireless connection (Xp to XP) a
lot faster than this, and previously an XP to Vista transfer (before my
brother smashed his previous laptop!!) was also as slow as this.

Seems clearly to be something to do with the OS's but I can't for the life
of me figure out what!!

P.S. It's up to a lightning 1.88MB/sec now!! .....Whoopi doo!! :-)

Should be faster than that if everything's working properly.

I would have expected 3 or 4 times that rate (50-60Mb/s on a 100Mb link).

Did you remember to turn off indexing in VISTA before starting the
transfer (I get the impression it's a waste of time anyway)?

I have seen posts in the MS Vista newsgroup of slow transfers due to
each file being re-indexed as a new one is added to the folder :-(

This may only happen if the receiving folder is open - but as I don't
have VISTA (only just changed from win98se because I mistakenly
installed the last set of updates and the system switched to "snail
mode"), I cannot confirm this.
