Default IP address conflict

On a windows ME I get this message: "Windows-The system has detected a
conflict for IP address .............with the system having hardware address
00:11F5:1A:AC:99. The interface has been disabled." I am on a small home
network using Linksys hard wired between ME/98/XP. I have no idea as to where
to beging looking into for this message and was wondering if the gurus here
would shed some light and perhaps offer a solution to remedy the problem.
Many thanks in advance!

ControlPanel/Network/LAN/Properties/TCPIP/Properties

check "obtain an IP address automatically"

Close.

Start/Run/winipcfg

Release
Renew

should work.

Either or both should work

the time but, strangely, once every blue moon.
