Can't get the wireless laptop to connect to OrangeLivebox

A quick google about brings up results suggests wireless vista laptops can't
connect yet to livebox.

Is this true?

any suggestions

is this a known issue - before I remove the pants that is Vista and stick XP
on the new laptop?

Hi,

I wonder if this is a wireless security issue?

I belive that by default these units are set to use WEP security which is
basically insecure and should not be used.

If the livebox is reconfigured to use WPA (or WPA-PSK) security then Windows
Vista might then connect via Wireless.

If you are using the Orange supplied USB Wireless adapter then they may not
be drivers available for Windows Vista, as yet.

Many USB items do not yet have drivers for Windows Vista however this is
improving.

Kind Regards

Simon

Vista is poo. It has major problems with DHCP and wireless access points so
if you know how you can try statically assigning the vista laptop an IP and
see if it starts working.
Or you can wipe it and put XP on..

Thanks for all the comments/advice guys!

Finally got it working by by setting the livebox channel to 11 ( its on 1
by default )
and setting security to wpa.
Works fine with those settings.

Livebox broadcasts both a wpa and a wep signal, i have seen several wireless
utilities that are unable to cope with this... Switching to either one or
the other in the livebox advanced configuration solves the issue..

Hi,

Don't forget to use a long WPA passphrase, 63 characters is best.

Use http://www.grc.com/pass to generate a random passphrase and record it in
a notepad file for later use. Use cut & past (CTRL+C and CTRL+V) to enter
the password in relevent password fields.

WPA is secure as long as you do use a long random passphase. The only known
attack on WPA is brute-force so this is the best defence.

Kind Regards

Simon
