Default Virgon: slow after 'upgrade'

I've just been 'upgraded' to the 20Mb service from 10Mb. What bollocks,
speed test results are reporting 7000-8000kbs now (as low as 5000 at one
point), it was previously 9300-9700 *all the time*.

Fuck you Virgin, fuck you very much

Are you on ADSL or cable? If ADSL, then it sounds like your line is
being retrained

ps, yes I know it's 24, but it's UPTO 24, so it could be 20 ;-)

Luck you! I'm currently on 1mbit and my telephone provider tested my line and told me today that the max I can sensibly get is 2mbit!
Pipex is still trying to sell me an 8mbit service in the meantime!

Seriously though, I recently read that Virgin have introduced packet shaping measures in some areas to throttle abuse and certiain types of traffic and generally provide a certain guaranteed minimum of bandwidth. This may have been introduced as part of your 'upgrade' and would only show up as an actual throughput as opposed to the actual line speed indicated by your modem.

One other point to bear in mind is that the actual speed you get you can get out of a line depends on its proximity to the exchange and the line quality. Increasing line speed on a even a slightly poor line may result in excessive transimssion errors and re-tries which in turn results in a reduction rather then increase of throughput. The optimum is the best speed the line can cope with without significant transimssion errors. Speeds aproaching 20mbit are unlikely for most of us on ADSL unless you happen to live very close to the exchange.

I would have thought that Virgin would have checked whether it was actually possible to get the desired line speed before selling you the upgraded service though.

Once again someone is jumping to the conclusion that the OP is on DSL.

The weight of facts given by the OP doesnot follow that believe
(Virgin don't offer 20Mb over DSL for a start).

I'm not disputing anything that you have posted other than the fact
that it has absaolutely nothing to do with what the OP is posting
about...

I was on Virgin 10 meg which I always got, now upgraded to 20 meg and I
sometimes get about 17.5 meg however in the evenings I'm lucky to get
2.5 meg so there's not a chance I'll ever be traffic shaped as it's not
likely I'll hit the required limits between 4 pm and midnight.

I've just ran a few tests and I'm getting about 15 meg at the moment, so
it looks like I'm in a similar position to yourself.

Sod them, I might drop Virgin and get ADSL. Due to circumstances I ended
up with both cable NTL and ADSL (Tiscali - eww) in my house for a while
at the back end of last year and I know I can get 6 meg on the ADSL, but
at least it'll be half the price. I've still got the Linksys wifi router
too.

Only thing with Virgin is, when I'm working from home the extra upload
speed they've given me will be handy...

With the speeds I'm getting I doubt I'd hit the 'abusive user' 3GB trigger

Not on cable, although if I did switch to ADSL the exchange isn't too
far away. I get about 6 megs.

I've heard that Virgin are more interested in advertsing spin than
actually offering any kind of decent service...
