Hello.
I have a WinME machine that comes with USB port. Recently I bought a ADSL modem that connects through the USB port. I load the driver that comes with the modem, and the computer seems to be able to detect the modem. But when it comes to configuring the modem, my machine told me that it can't find http://0.0.0.10 I checked the Control Center, and it seemed that everything was there, but no matter how I tried, my machine just flatly refuse to let me configure the modem. On my friend's machine, which I am using now, I see that in his SYSTEM folder inside the Control Center, under the USB sub-folder, there is a "Generic USB HUB" driver listed. My machine doesn't have that, and I really don't know where to get one. I even went to the Windowsupdate site, but I dunno where that "Generic USB HUB" thing resides. So, can you plese tell me where I can get the "Generic USB HUB" driver for WinME ? I do use my machine with thumb drive, printer, and digital camera via the USB port with no problem, and I can't figure out why I can't make this ADSL modem work. Please help !!! Thanks in advance !! Okay. You do have some USB peripherals installed and functional, so you should have some kind of USB hub. In my Device Manager list I show a 'trident' shaped icon with the forks pointing to the right, labeled, "Universal Serial Bus controller". Expanded out, there are three items attached under the USB controller: Intel(r) 82891AA USB Universal Host Controller PA090 USB ROOT HUB USB Root Hub I will guess that the first two items will be vendor specific, and if you even have a counterpart, it won't be the same name. I expect the name will depend upon the support chip set on your motherboard. You should see some kind of hub, though. Why not post back and tell us what items are listed under that 'trident' icon. Also note; I have a SCSI, as well as a USB controller. I have devices attached to each, the USB and the SCSI controller. The devices are not actually listed under the controllers, but under other icons; "Imaging Device" for the SCSI device, and "Sound, video, and game controllers" for the USB device. I am not certain whether a USB modem would be listed under the "Modem" icon, or get an icon of its own. Maybe somebody with a USB modem installed and working will post what their Device Manager shows. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |

That's all. > Also note; I have a SCSI, as well as a USB controller. I have devices > attached to each, the USB and the SCSI controller. The devices are not > actually listed under the controllers, but under other icons; "Imaging > Device" for the SCSI device, and "Sound, video, and game controllers" for > the USB device. My problem is no matter how many times I installed the driver, - btw, all went successfully without any error, - I couldn't log on to the "network". I've checked the "network" icon in the Control Center, and there's a "Client for Microsoft Network" there, so my system is supposed to be networked. But when I run the "xxx.url" thingy that supposed to let me configure my connection - in this case http://10.0.0.0.2 - my system replied that it can't find the thing, or I have NO PERMISSION TO ACCESS whatever it is. I tried my ADSL modem and the installation on my friend's PC, and EVERYTHING worked fine. It's just MINE that got me crazy. Oh, my friend's PC had almost the same thing as mine, even the OS are the same. > I am not certain whether a USB modem would be listed under the "Modem" icon, > or get an icon of its own. Maybe somebody with a USB modem installed and > working will post what their Device Manager shows. I checked, there's a ADSL modem under the "Network Adapter" and according the my PC, it is functioning. I have even tried to UNINSTALL everything, and then re-install again, and still, the one thing that's missing is the "generic hub" thingy - my friend's machine, which had the same peripheral connections as mine, had 2 "generic hub" thingy after I installed my ADSL modem in it. Mine, on the other hand, had just ONE "generic hub" thingy. Other than that, I have NO IDEA what's going on. Thanks for replying, and hope that you or anyone who's reading can help out. Many thanks again !! |

That looks promising; that tells me that the ADSL modem is recognized. I don't think you need to try reinstalling at this point. > I've checked the "network" icon in the Control Center, and there's a > "Client for Microsoft Network" there, so my system is supposed to be > networked. Mine, on the other hand, had just ONE "generic hub" thingy. Don't worry about having exactly what your friend has. As things stand, your description seems to indicate that your modem is installed and recognized. We need to back up to the part about accessing the modem configuration page. Your USB controller seems to be seeing the modem; this is good. Your next step needs to be to check the Network Properties. There needs to be an adapter for the modem there. On the "Configuration" tab, where the "Client for Microsoft Networks" is listed, what else is there? You should have one "Adapter" (green PC board icon) for your dial up modem, one "Adapter" for your USB ADSL modem, and maybe others; but at least those two. In my case, I can see: Client for Microsoft Networks Dial-Up Adapter HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter LapLink USB Network Cable TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter TCP/IP -> HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter TCP/IP -> LapLink USB Network Cable USB-USB Network -> Dial-Up Adapter USB-USB Network -> HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter USB-USB Network -> LapLink USB Network Cable File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks The items labeled "TCP/IP" and "USB-USB" are protocols, which need to be attached to adapters in order for them to work. The '->' following the protocol name "points" to the name of the adapter to which it is attached. At a minimum, assuming that you have an internal dial-up modem (I do not know what an external modem would look like in this list; I don't have one), you should see: Client for Microsofte Networks Dial-Up Adapter USB-ADSL modem TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter TCP/IP -> USB-ADSL modem Post back what you actually have, and we can take it from there. Don't worry if you have more stuff; but post it all, even if you have more. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |
