Default Router

HI can anyone help me well iam getting a ps3 and i need a internet
connection in my room for multiplayer gaming, well at first i wanted
wireless but heard mixed reviews mainly the security side and
reliability of connections so i decided to go for a wired router but i
read somewhere that i wont be able to use my computer at the same time
as the ps3 (internet connection) can someone tell me if this is the
case.
Also i dont know what type of cabling i would need for the connection
to 2 seprate rooms both needing the internet mine included.
Can anyone suggest a retailer and router.

Not a major problem. That's a bit like saying I've heard front doors
are insecure, should I use bricks and mortar instead. It's less secure
than wired, but not totally insecure unless you don't set up any
security, (like you're rornt door isn't secure if you leave it wide
open, not the doors fault).

Nope, you can use many devices at the same time and they can all acces
the internet.

Cat5e cables, but if wireless would be easier then there's no reason
not to use that. It's not as unsecure as some people make out.

Netgear DG834G from Amazon would probably be a reasonable place to
start for equipment..

I wouldnt completely write off wireless - the technology is getting much
better and I have a 360, PSP and laptop all using it simultaneously and am
trying to get a PDA :P

It's only half the speed of a wired connection, which while it isn't a
major thing as far as internet access goes it could make a big difference
if you want to transfer large files from one machine to another.

I only use wireless where I absolutely *have* to - if I'm near an Ethernet
socket (most rooms in the house have a few) then I plug in.

It is most definitely NOT the case. A modem/router combo's main job is
to share the internet connection.

It's called lots of different things but it's all the same, you need
"Cat5" or "ethernet" cable. If you are going for a gigabit speed network
then you will need "cat6" cable.

For what you want any router will do the job. I use www.dabs.com for
most of my IT stuff.

Dabs are excellent. Great prices, superhumanly fast and responsive when
there are problems. Has anyone had a bad experience with them?

Hell no & I even get discount of them as well.....all in all a big plus IF
they have the parts you require. Tried to get a SAT DVDrom & DVDwriter &
would you believe that they didn't have both, only the writers...

True if youre transferring data but considering IDE is only 30MBps at best
I'd say youre probably safe.

They sail very close to the wind with their terms and conditions. Many of
these clearly don't comply with consumer protection legislation. Caveat
emptor!
