Default Any ideas anyone?

Sorry to bother you all and I'm sure it will turn out to be a simple answer,
*BUT*:

Round about midnight tonight 10-3-07, I suddenly lost my Internet
connection. I can still access email, and the newsgroups on nntp,
(obviously), but when I try to open IE7 it just hangs on my home page -
www.google.co.uk and no other popular pages like Amazon, eBay, or even the
BBC will open either. I have contacted my *new* ISP, [ADSL24, reseller for
Entanet] and was rather surprised to hear the bloke at the end of the phone
suggest I go and install FireFox then all my problems would probably be
solved.

Apart from anything else, I did not purchase an Entanet package in order to
get such silly suggestions, so I'm seriously wondering if anyone out there
can steer me in the right direction to get my browser going again, and I'm
also seriously wondering if any other Entanet (or their reseller) customers
have come across the likes of this? Have I jumped from Pipex's frying pan
right into Entanets fire?

Well, it's not a silly suggestion, but I'm surprised at an ISP not
telling you to reinstall Windows first.

IE7 is a pretty poor browser program, and it's worth having an
alternative installed.

It's worth having an alternative to any browser, kept safe. You need
access to the web to fix so many problems. I understand that Microsoft
even have a web page on what to do if IE doesn't work.

Does not sound likely to be an SP problem based on what you have said -
perhaps a problem with your installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer
or with the DNS setup (though odd that email/news still works).

What software do you use for email/news? Do you have any
anti-virus/anti-spayware programs installed, what do they say when you
run them? Can you "ping" www.bbc.co.uk and/or "4.2.2.2"?

Then you didn't lose your Internet connection.

Almost certainly a local problem, then. Try clearing out the IE cache,
etc.

Well, I guess this is a 'budget' service, so no surprises there.

Presumably you purchased it because it was cheap. There are of course
some good, cheap, providers around (well, perhaps) but something has to
pay for support people.

I'd look at the IE setup...sounds as if you might be out of space on the
disk, or your firewall has suddenly misconfigured.

A sensible suggestion..! Not relevant to your problem I agree, but a good
idea nonetheless. Firefox beats IE hands down.

You might look to see if you have a web proxy configured and, if so,
get rid of it.

I don't know where to look for this in IE, however, since I don't use it.
