speed on networking computer

Having recently setup a wireless network between a laptop and desktop I was
wondeirng how much speed slowdown I would get on the laptop which is the
network computer on the wireless network.

Sometimes it hangs when surfing or downloading, just wondeirng whatm ight be
causing this and how to rectify this ?

Can you explain a bit more about how the computers are connected to the
internet. Are they both connected to a router by Ethernet cable? Are either
connected by wireless link to a router?

Are you using Internet Connection Sharing (or similar technology which makes
one PC behave as a router):

Your wording "a wireless network between a laptop and desktop" makes me
wonder whether it's an ICS configuration.

Why not pay around £40 and get someone in for an hour or so to sort out
the mess you seem to be in?

Anyone half-decent will happily explain what they are doing so as to see
you on your way to progressing to more complex things.

The desktop top is connected to the net via the router\router in one, the
router is connected to the computer via an ethernet cable. (thats the
desktop). Also has a wifi dongle to make it wireless

The laptop is wifi enabled so I connect the the desktop like this.

I think my desktop software that came with the router is doing this.

Not quite sure what an ICS config is but I can explain what I've done. I
have a desktop and a laptop which I wanted the laptop to go online wireless
with. I bought a wireless router\adsl 2 gizmo which is connected to my
desktop pc via a ethernet cable going into a nic card. With all of that I
can now connect the the net on the laptop.

I'm quite new to networking and have a limited grapse of it all so please
bear with me.

If theres anything else you need to know let me know and I'll post it back.

....I'm not in a "mess" I have a working wireless network and wanted to know
if I can get it to perform a little faster. Simple question and I don't care
for your barrage of abuse in the uk discounts group!

Let's get one thing absolutely straight - /you/ were *not* subject to
any abuse from me, I was responding to 2 others who began abusing /me/
over something else.

If anything, it was I who pointed you to the correct group so you could
actually get a working wireless network. The lack of thanks is duly
noted...

So, moving on -

Judging from your posts, you seemed to be getting in a bit of a
'pickle' with your network, and you yourself even suggested you were
going to get a "pro" in to help - don't have a pop at me for simply
reinforcing that.

Sometimes, no matter what, you can't help folk remotely because the
problem does require hands on. How does anyone here know exactly what
your network settings are if you are unable to explain them yourself?
You may have a 54G network set at 11b, for example.

I was only trying to be helpful in suggesting what i did, because I
thought - incorrectly it seems - that you were struggling and were ready
to call someone in.

Clearly you are not, and if your problems can be sorted within this
group, then all is well and good.
