Hello conor its a adsl router in one, I have enabled wifi on the laptop, and have the dongle plugged in to the desktop machine. Read the manuals very vague and thin on setting up to be honest. Called belkin for some help but they are no around till tommorow. I think this might be a bit out of my reach so going to let a pro do it. |

I've very little knowledge of networking, and know nothing at all about ADSL. Last Wednesday I set up an ADSL modem/router/wifi at my Son's house. It was all working in under 30 minutes, and that included installing a PCI network card in my Granddaughter's PC, changing the user name & password and checking the security settings were all sensible. Oh, and all the bits were used, from eBay. There are masses of simple guides on-line. Setting up only involves running a wizard. If things go wrong there will be a full user manual on the install CD or at the manufacturer's website. Chris -- Remove prejudice to reply. |

Does your desktop have a public IP or are you using NAT on the router? If you're not sure, the likelihood is that you are, and so your desktops wired network card will have an IP like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. If you want to use the USB dongal, then in order for the laptop to reach the router, and so reach the internet, I beleive you will have to enable internet connection sharing on the desktop. AISI this means the latop will be double NAT'd! No idea whether this works and if it did I imagine it would be hassle. If you can configure the desktop to get a public IP (some modem/routers can give the public IP to a host on the LAN) then it should be trivial to set up ICS on the desktop. If the Modem/router has multiple ethernet ports why not get an wireless access point and forget about ICS on the desktop. That way you can reach the internet without having the desktop powered up. The money you save in electricity will soon pay for the WAP. It also means you will have a more secure wireless connection: You won't have to run it in ad-hoc mode and you will benefit from the better security options of a modern AP. HTH |
