Default Microsoft KB Article 293793

Hi All,

I seem to be suffering from the problem described in
Microsoft knowledge base article 293793. i.e. Whenever I
try to access an MS office file (.xls or .doc) that
resides on a shared Windows 2000 from my Windows ME
machine, ME blue screens.

The article states that there is a fix and that I should
contact microsoft but doesn't tell me how. I have tried
the free support links from the microsoft site but these
tell me my copy of Me is OEM and I need to contact Packard
Bell. The Packard Bell site only gives me hardware fix
info.

Can someone confirm my only option is to pay microsoft for
support - even tho the problem is known and they have a
fix?

Regards

Steve

Did you try the WorkAround as per the MSKB 293793?

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this problem, disable opportunistic locking on the server by
setting the server 'EnableOplocks' registry value to '0' (zero). For
additional information about this topic, click the article number below to
