Default Newbie question: Wireless Router-USB Modem

Good afternoon all,
I was given a brand new Belkin Wireless G Router and I already have an
ACC300 USB modem. The modem has a USB cable to my PC, but the router only
has RJ45 network sockets. I have found an adaptor to fit the RJ45 into the
USB A conn. on my PC, but can't find one for the modem end. The modem has a
USB B connector. So basically, I think I need either, a cable with a USB B
conn at one end to fit the modem and a RJ45 at the other, or an adaptor.
I've Googled and can't find what I'm looking for.
Thanks for any help.
WM

I'm afraid that the reason you can't find a cable like this is because it
doesn't make sense for it to exist: you are trying to join two pieces of
equipment that aren't compatible. Connecting USB and Ethernet is more
complicated than just having a cable with the appropriate connectors at each
end.

If your modem had had an RJ45 Ethernet LAN connector in addition to the USB,
you could in theory have connected the modem to the router that way. But
according to the thread "Cannot connect BT modem to my wireless router" in
uk.telecom.broadband this often doesn't work in this country where we use
PPPoA rather PPPoE encapsulation for broadband.

I think you may need to see if you can exchange the router for one which
includes an ADSL modem.

Ah. OK. It's possible to buy a USB to Ethernet converter, is it? Fair
enough. But I *think* this will still fall foul of the restriction described
in the thread "Cannot connect BT modem to my wireless router" in
uk.telecom.broadband because in this country we use PPPoA rather than PPPoE.
I must admit I'm a bit gobsmacked that UK-spec modems which have Ethernet
connections can't handle the change of encapsulation, given that if they
did, it would allow people to do what you are wanting as an alternative to
buying a new router.

Not in the direction he wants to convert it.

USB isn't a peer-to-peer protocol, which is why the cables have a
different connector on each end. You can get a USB-to-ethernet adapter
that will work for the PC, but not for the modem. USB modems are
generally pretty crap anyway, so get a nice new ethernet one. Faced
with the prospect of getting a new modem you might decide to get a
modem-router because it's neater and not much more expensive, then you
could give the USB modem and Belkin router to someone else.

Thanks for all the info. I guess you're right, I'll give both away and get a
modem/router.
