I have an XP desktop named "grande" with a nic card and an ME laptop
named "chico" with a wireless pc card. The desktop connects to a LAN port on a US Robotics all in one wireless router (switch/router/access point). I am setting the IP on each. 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2, respectively. Same subnet mask. Workgroup on each set to "home". Now on the ME laptop, chico, in Windows Explorer, I can see and browse both computers on the network. In XP, on grande, I can see both computers under "home" but when I click chico the ME computer I get a "network path not found" error. Also, on grande, when I type \\chico\shareddir in the Windows Explorer address bar I sometimes get through and can see the contents of the shared directory. But.. Windows Explorer shows the computer chico as living under a workgroup called "Unknown". Is the problem with the XP machine or the ME laptop? Can the XP machine not see out or is the ME laptop not granting access? Maybe it's the router?? *Any* ideas on what is going wrong? Many thanks! Eric Eric |

Thanks Carey!
Is IPX/SPX really needed still? On the XP machine also? DO I need to apply tip one to the ME laptop even though it seems to be able to browse the network just fine? Are there any tools to see where another computer on the network is coming from? ie. IP, mask, workgroup? Thanks again Eric "Carey Holzman" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:<(E-Mail Removed)>... > www.careyholzman.com/netfixes.htm > > I recommend Tip #1 on all PCs > > Carey > > "Eric" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message > news:(E-Mail Removed) om... > > I have an XP desktop named "grande" with a nic card and an ME laptop > > named "chico" with a wireless pc card. > > The desktop connects to a LAN port on a US Robotics all in one > > wireless router (switch/router/access point). > > > > I am setting the IP on each. 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2, > > respectively. > > Same subnet mask. > > Workgroup on each set to "home". > > > > Now on the ME laptop, chico, in Windows Explorer, I can see and browse > > both computers on the network. > > > > In XP, on grande, I can see both computers under "home" but when I > > click chico the ME computer I get a "network path not found" error. > > > > Also, on grande, when I type \\chico\shareddir in the Windows Explorer > > address bar I sometimes get through and can see the contents of the > > shared directory. IPX is used as a diagnostic protocol. Is it needed? Well, I suggest you
follow each step and see if your network works. If it does, remove IPX and see if your network still works. Then write me back and tell me if you needed IPX.
