Linksys WAG54G can't connect to virgin.net

HI,
I just picked up a 2nd hand router for cheap money off ebay. Its wireless & port lan router.

On my old PT3812 router the, I just have to put in ****.****@adsl.virgin.net and my passsword.

Its other settings state :
PPPoPvc 0
MTU 1492
MSS 1492
MSS 1432


The Linkysys has got more options :-

encapsulation :
RFC2364PPPoA
RFC2516PPPoE
RFC 1483 Bridged
RFC 1483 Routed
Bridge mode only

service name
user name
password

host name
domain name



So given my virgin.net adsl address above, what options should I be choosing and what 'names' should I be entering to get adsl connected properly ?

The VC was on 35. Changing to 38 did the trick

I just need to suss out how to make my old PT3812 router work just a swich
now. Do I just have to turn off ASDL & DHCP ?

Yes, have seen that "out of the box" on a Netgear wireless unit.
I know KC doesn't use 0,38 (from info supplied by Solwise), but
0,38 is standard for UK BT/LLU services outside the KC area.

Just don't connect anything to the ADSL/WAN side of it. A switch is just a
switch, the commercial router/switch combos have an internal link between
a two-port router and an unseen port on the switch that distributes the
output around your LAN.

If the router's inactive then it will have no effect on your network. I'd
set its IP to be on your subnet, just so it's easier to configure if the
need arises, and is a known quantity so you can avoid clashes. In theory
however you could ignore it completely.

And, yes, I'd turn off DHCP on the router, once you've done that you can
pretty much forget about it, it has nothing to route and nowhere to route
it to.. Perhaps set it up as something static, just so it's not sitting
there trying to make a connection that's never going to happen.
