Default Setting metric for an NIC

Hi Experts:

On my Windows XP, I tried to the metric for one of the network cards through
the TCP/IP settings, say set it to 10, it seems took effect as shown by the
output of "route print"; but after a short while, it goes back to its
original automatically configured metric of 20 as shown in "route print".

Why is this, is the manual setting supposed to be perminent?

Thanks in advance
Polaris
