Hi,
I've recently acquired a laptop, and am trying to replace my Speedtouch USB ADSL modem with a wireless router so I can connect my laptop, as well as my existing desktop, to the Internet. However, the instructions I have assume that I do not already have a connection/modem, and I have not been able to find any instructions on how to go about doing this, including whether it is necessary (or extremely inadvisable!) to uninstall the old modem/its associated software (eg Dr SpeedTouch) before disconnecting it. Can anyone advise me? Thanks, James McLaughlin. james.d.mclaughlin@googlemail.com |

If you're changing away from using a USB modem it would be advisable to uninstall the associated drivers etc. If all else fails you can always install them again, but you don't need them if you are using a router.. |

If the USB hardware isn't connected, then the drivers will surely not be used (probably won't even be loaded, unless you know different). I'd think it easier to leave them installed - if one day the router is acting up, and the OP needs to test the line, sods law says there will be no sign of the floppy/CD with the drivers for the USB modem ! The hardware will be sat on a shelf, but the drivers may have been filed in a draw... or thrown out when someone was tidying up! |

True, that is one way to go, personally I get rid of anything not wanted & seeing as I've got at least 4 routers sitting here doing nothing so don't have a problem if the one I _have_to_ use goes tits up I can always prove synch or no synch (just won't be able to browse with them).. |

Have been a bit busy, but didn't realise so much time had elapsed - so
to everyone who posted their advice, thanks! The router is now set up. Thanks again! James McLaughlin. |
