cannot find server

I can not use internet explorer on laptop. After trying
to install VPN and the battery went dead, I can no longer
use IE to browse the internet. When I put in any ip or
url I always get "cannot find server". I have re-
installed ie6 and windows me. Can anyone help?

Additional info:

If I put in an IP address it changes to http:///?%20
followed emediately by the IP I Entered. I don't know if
this helps but I thought it might shed some light on the
problem

I have a similar problem.Never gets out on the net.Seem´s
like W Me has some problem. With W2k it works allright.All
settings in the laptop are OK,but the final result
is "do´nt find the server"
