Default win2k server, odd network services behaviour

i have a strange network services problem with a Windows 2000 Server PDC.
since a recent re-boot, i have been unable to ping machines on my network by
DNS name from the Server (all clients ping eachother OK). however, i can ping
by IP and i can browse the web from this box.

also, whenever i try to access the "Network & Connections" properties from
Control Panel or from My Network Places, the window freezes up. similarly,
when i try to run anything requiring Windows Installer (like adding
NetDiag.exe for example), that freezes up too. Scheduled SQL DTS packages
which replicate data from SQL tables hosted on this server to other servers
fail (even though they connect via IP address).

my Event Log shows a number of NetLogon errors and Browser Elections (#5774,
#5775, #5702, #8015 and #8035).

these problems seem to be limited to client network services on the Windows
2000 box, as all clients (every one is WinXPPro) are talking to the box OK,
so i don't think its DNS server-related.

theres nothing suspicious in my RunOnce and Run registry keys, so i'm at a
loss as to the cause and the fix. can anyone offer any suggestions as to
what could have gone wrong?

thanks,
CodeSling

Default RE: win2k server, odd network services behaviour

update! when i run nslookup on the server like 'nslookup
clienttofind.mydomain.co.uk', i receive the following result :

Server: resolver0.myisp.net
Address: 212.xx.36.3

*** resolver0.myisp.net can't find clienttofind.mydomain.co.uk: Non-existent
domain

it looks to me like my server is ignoring its own roll as dns server and
referring all dns requests (even for those computers within my
company/domain) to my isp.

how can i fix this? i'm still unable to launch the network properties box,
so where do i change my DNS server priorities?

please help!
