Hi,
Since the installation, I've had huge problems with the speed of my broadband. The speed was ridiculously low around 50 kbps. I have called BT several times about this problem, they said there was a problem with the phone line etc. The problem Has now been resolved they said, and the speed stabilised at 120 kbps. They say it is ok. Well, I don't think it is. I am paying £27 for up to 8 mbps speeds and have 40GB download limit. Spoken to a guy from BT and he says I am paying for usage, not for speed. Well, it seems to be a nonsense, as Broadband is all about speed. He said there was nothing they could do. When I check on BT website, it says: Check availability - resultsFor Telephone Number 0131******* on Exchange DEAN Our initial test on your line indicates that you may be able to have BT Broadband with download speeds up to 512Kbps, which is up to 10 times faster than dial-up. At the moment, your telephone line is unable to support our 2Mb speed broadband package. Also, due to the length of your line, an engineer visit may be required to set up your broadband service. What is that mean? I must also note that there were times after installation when the speed was well over 1mbps, so there must be a way to make it at least that fast. One more thing, when ordering, another BT guy said that speeds up to 2.4 mbps are available on my line. Well, I am very confused. Not willing to pay that much for that little. You need to understand that on a standard BT line i.e. not one that has been unbundled to another provider there two main forms of service that are offered through ISPs. Firstly there is the fixed line speed service that is usually available at 512K 1MB or 2MB dependant on the line conditions. If the line is long and BT think the speed the line will support they will say what speed they think it will support. They may also say that an engineer visit may be required to set it up. Not too difficult to understand is it? BT also offer a service called MAXDSL that has the potential to offer a speed of up to 8M though in fact the maximum achievable is just over 7MB. The actual speed depends on various factors and if you read the various articles on ADSL guide you will find out more. Amongst other things it is explained that there is a learning period of ten days or so whilst the BT system establishes what the maximum stable speed the line will support. So which kind of service has your ISP supplied? Is it a fixed rate or variable? Once you tell us that maybe we can help you more. But please make a little effort and READ the references referred to first. Peter Crosland |
