Depends on the router, and without being mind-readers we cannot easily
answer as to what model you are using (and it might help to know your
ISP, too). Sometimes you will be able to see information from the
router only via the user interface (available using web browser or
telnet), but again, without knowing the model, we're in the dark.

some phone line checker might report that a line has ADSL already or
fully installed but there's no guarantee that while the setting up
seems to have been completed, it actually works. A friend found
that a DACS was still on the line, so ADSL would not work.

Depends on the router, of course. More information is always useful!

Many routers have a 'DSL' or 'sync' light which usually flashes. But the
router manual may give a clue, or post here with more details.

Its a Dlink DSL-G604T wireless router, I think my best bet is to switch
it on whilst unpugged from the phone socket make a note of the ADSL
light/LED status.
Then connect to the phone socket restart the router and see if the
light/LED changes.

I have that router.
When switched on, power light is on, adsl light is on, wlan is on (for
wireless) and status is flashing.
