Default WINS needed on Windows 2003 domain?

Is WINS needed on a Windows 2003 PDC, that only has Windows 2000
Professional and Windows XP Professional connected to it?

Thank you,

rodger

If you want to browse, yes, I'd install it.

WINS is needed for NetBIOS resolution over multiple subnets. If you have
only one subnet, WINS would not be needed.

I think it's indicated even with a single subnet - if you want to retain the
ability to browse, but don't want nasty browser election wars & associated
network chit-chat going on between machines.

I tend to install & use it, and disable the computer browser service on all
clients via GPO.

WINS can still provide some useful stuff, for a starters it's nice to have a
backup network locator service and secondly you can lookup which users have
logged in quickly and easily (messenger service registering in wins)
